Yes, we are buried in snow right now so thoughts of the garden might be far from your mind. Depending on the species, winter can be a good time to trim trees and certain shrubs because they are dormant and not susceptible to pests. Check with your local extension office for up to date information.

This is also the best time to plan your garden for the coming season. Once spring arrives, you will want to have a list of seeds and plants and a layout for your planting beds. Looking through seed catalogs and checking online sources is a great distraction from the wintery weather.

  4. I can't believe how much snow is in our yard. The snowbanks are taller than I am.

On Thursday, I heard this scratching outside our bedroom window. When I looked out, I saw one of the snow-covered branches from our crabapple tree scraping against the window.

I opened the window, removed the screen, and reached out to prune it. Does that count as gardening?

    1. I was thinking as I was driving yesterday that this is like the snow I remember from my childhood. We must remember the years with the highest snowbanks. I think that pruning your crabapple in February definitely counts as gardening - even if it's from inside your house!

  5. Thank you Gayle for bringing happy thoughts of spring to my mind. I was beginning to believe that Minnesota is always covered in snow and ice. Thoughts of beautiful gardens and green grass remind me that we live through the wretched winters so we can appreciate the beautiful spring, summer and fall months.

  6. Great blog, I create a garden every spring and love it, its pretty relaxing and I get a lot of thinking done while I do it. I plant vegetables mainly tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, pumpkins, herbs and I planted strawberries last year so I hope the come back this year. I know the snow is great for the yard and garden but it needs to warm up and melt the snow, its getting old. Great topic!
